Read the inscriptions.
Names, dates of
preserver & preserved,
histories of
displacement, one
written in metal, the other
in earth.
Walked the paved
quarter-mile, stopped
at signposts
that aligned the mound
with summer & winter,
sun & moon.
These, too, missed the point.
Did our due diligence,
our civic duty.
But we paid our respects
by wandering off the pavement
into the trail, off the trail
to the bank below, to see if we could
throw stones across the river.
